Pride Month takes place annually in June and is a time to celebrate our LGBTQ+ communities. Pride Month was established to honour the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 28 1969, which spurred the creation of many gay activist movements all around the world and helped evolve the pride movement into what we celebrate today.
Masked For Work was coincidentally launched in June 2020. To show our support for the LGBTQ+ community, we wanted our first design to follow our core values. As an eco-conscious company we have a firm belief in supporting and protecting those we hold dear to our heart and the communities they thrive in. Seeing that we have staff and friends who belong to the LGBTQ+ community, It only seemed logical to pay tribute to such a great cause.
We had Karina Gill, content and creative extraordinaire, design our pride masks. We reached out earlier to get Karina’s perspective on Pride and the creative design behind the mask.
Masked For Work: What does Pride mean to you?
Karina Gill: Pride to me is a celebration of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and it is an opportunity to educate the wider public on the real barriers the community face and how to be an ally and better support the community.
Masked For Work: What did you want to represent in the Pride mask design?
Karina Gill: I wanted to represent Pride with this design, using the rainbow flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ movement, as an outward mark of support and solidarity for the community.
Masked For Work: How did you arrive at the final Pride mask design?
Karina Gill: I explored various designs, taking inspiration from Pride symbols and my experiences of Vancouver Pride over the last 9 years. The simple but powerful feel of this design kept drawing me back and [Masked For Work founder] Stephanie Sang agreed!
This mask comes in black or light grey material and features a sleek vertical rainbow stripe design on the outside. Our Pride mask comes in the same eco-friendly, breathable, 3-layer construction that fulfills the safety standards provided by the World Health Organization.
Masked For Work’s Pride masks are available online individually or in 5-packs from our website, and a small selection is also available for purchase at the Social Crust Cafe. A portion of sales from Pride masks are donated to a local charity.
We really wanted to take the time this June to honour the impacts of LGBTQ+ individuals and celebrate diversity. Despite social gathering limits posed by the Coronavirus pandemic, we will continue to celebrate and promote lots of official online events that are planned for 2021 throughout the summer. Follow us on social media to check out these exciting events and where you can support Pride.
